A spouse visa (or a partner visa), is a type of family visa for those who intend to settle in the UK permanently with their British spouse or partner.

Suitable for

The applicant's spouse or partner must be one of the following:

  • British citizens or people who are permanently resident in the UK;

  • Have refugee status or humanitarian protection;

  • EU or ECAA citizens in the UK

Applicants who meet the following conditions can apply for a UK spouse visa:

  • Married couples need to have a legal marriage certificate in the UK;

  • Unmarried partners (sufficient proof of having lived together for at least two years);

  • The relationship is bona fide;

  • Possess a demonstrably good knowledge of the English language;

  • Have sufficient finance to support themselves and their families; applicants and their partners must have a comprehensive income of at least £18,600 per year, provide bank statements and at least 6 months of UK pay slips; other methods to prove financial status are available

  • Able to provide accommodation for applicants and their families.

General Application Requirements

Period of grant

The visa holder can stay in the UK for 2 years and 9 months with this visa. The visa can be renewed once before it expires, and you can apply for permanent residence in the UK after residing in the UK for 5 years.
